For years, dad loved to sit outside and photograph birds with his big lens. He especially loved the Hummers. I, myself, had a very surreal experience years ago watching a Hummer mama push her babies out of the nest one at a time., just as my last child was heading to college. This image was taken by me, in dad’s backyard, 6 months to the date after he passed. It was the first time I was able to walk into his camera closet, without anxiety, and pick up one of his cameras. I sat outside, just as he did, waiting. I felt his presence and I felt His presence. The Hummers often show up in our lives, since dad passed, in other random places too. They dance in front of us in delight and catch us off-guard as they appear so close for a minute. It’s always when we are in deep thought or maybe struggling with our grief.
